Two Companies, Closer Than They Look
Schools comparing Yondr and Generation Faraday usually arrive with one idea: Generation Faraday blocks signal, and Yondr locks. As of this year (2026), neither half of that is the whole story. Yondr introduced it’s Faraday signal-blocking pouch in addition to its V4 (also new for 2026) best-in-class standard lockable pouch. And in September 2026 Generation Faraday announced that every one of its bag styles is now available without the signal-blocking liner. Both companies sell both kinds of pouches.
Much of what is written online still describes Yondr as a locking pouch that does not block signal. Adn while this is accurate about Yondr's standard pouch, it is outdated and incomplete about the full line Yondr now offers. With signal blocking available from either company, the comparison that matters is how each pouch closes, who controls access, and what customers also receive in the services that come with their purchase.
The Underlying Difference: Shielding First or Program First
Generation Faraday is a division of Mission Darkness, a Faraday bag brand known for supplying military and police customers. It came to schools who were looking for signal blocking as part of their requirements, adding locking bags, unlock docks, and a tracking app to a product line built around signal blocking.
As the category creator more than a decade ago, Yondr came from the other direction. As the first company to specifically support the phone-free schools category, Yondr has been building phone-free spaces since 2014, with partners in all 50 U.S. states and more than 48 countries around the world. Yondr has always been more than just a product. It offers a phone-free program. Every deployment includes policy consultation and custom program development, operational onboarding with the equipment, staff training, and ongoing support as schools embed their programs as their new “norm”. The Faraday configuration was added to a program that already had more than ten years of K-12 rollouts behind it, as customers continue to consider the changes technology are introducing to their policies.
While each company is strong where their journeys began, they each do have equipment that supports a school's decision as to whether they want and need signal blocking as part of their overall program. Many schools run effective phone-free programs with a pouch that simply locks and does not block signal. Shielding earns its place when a school policy or RFP requires it, when notification noise disrupts class, or when students are hotspotting or screen mirroring around the school network, the cases our ranking of the best signal-blocking phone pouches for schools walks through.

Locks, Access, and Tamper Evidence
The Yondr pouch closes with a proprietary pushpin lock built into the pouch, and the current pouch uses a thicker pin and a stronger locking mechanism. It is tamper-evident: a school can tell when a pouch has been opened, whether accidental or deliberate. Students keep possession of their own phone inside the locked pouch, and unlocking happens at bases placed at access points the school designates.
Generation Faraday's locking bag, the Max Lock, closes with a rolled top and a magnetic seal, and a locking clasp then clamps around a metal ring on the bag. Staff open it by pressing the clasp against an unlock dock or handheld key.
When comparing any two locking pouches, ask whether the lock is part of the pouch or attached to it. A lock assembly attached as a separate part adds a seam, and a seam is a place where the closure can come away from the pouch without the lock being defeated.

On shielding, put the same question to both vendors: was the finished pouch tested, or only the fabric inside it, and against which standard? Our buyer's guide to Faraday phone pouches for schools explains why the answer matters, and what Yondr costs in 2026 covers the pricing model.
The Pouch Is the Easy Part
Both vendors can each sell a school a pouch that locks and blocks signal. Implementation is the hardest part of going phone-free: getting students, staff, and families to keep a new routine in January as well as in September. Yondr does not just ship a box of pouches and leave a school to figure it out on its own. Every Yondr school partnership comes with an experienced representative and partner success support, and that is the part of the purchase a spec sheet does not show.
